Apple iOS 16: Release Date, Features, Compatibility, Beta Download

The full version of Apple iOS 15 is not even out and users are already concerned about iOS 16. It’s been only a couple of weeks that Apple released the first beta iOS 15.

Currently, Apple is working on iOS 16 that is expected to arrive next year. Some of you may think that Apple is planning far too ahead. But we got to know from many people from Apple that wishlists and concepts should be created in advance. So this is the perfect time for Apple to start planning for iOS 16.

According to reports, the new iOS 15 comes with many big improvements. However, the developers have made very few changes regarding system functionality. This led us to think about the changes that we would like to see in iOS 16 next year. We looked at some of the features introduced this year and also the ones that came with the iOS 14 last year. Based on this we have curated a list of new features and functionalities that we want in iOS 16.

iOS 16 features

  1. Interactive widgets

From what we have seen interactive widgets are not preferred on iOS 15. It comes with a couple of built-in apps like Game Center, Find My, and Mail. But widgets still aren’t easily resizable or interactive. We even tried analysing two of Apple’s apps to figure out how widgets can be made more interactive but it didn’t prove to be productive.

We believe that the Home app needs interactive widgets the most. Imagine having a small widget to turn a HomeKit product on/off. Wouldn’t that feel more convenient to use? Even Voice Memos would need an interactive widget, too. This would allow you to voice record right from your Lock Screen or Home Screen.

  1. App Library Home Screen icon

This was inspired by the redesign of the App Library design on iPadOS 15. You must swipe on the final Home Screen to access the App Library on your iPhone. This is the only way of accessing the app library. It would be great to see the same iPadOS icon to be placed on iPhone, but it should be moveable to any location.

This would let users place the App Library in their dock for easy and quick access. However, it would be more beneficial to place it on your first Home Screen. This would help users to have lots of pages, whether they are full of widgets or apps.

  1. Handoff + AirPlay with Siri

One thing all iPhone users want is to be able to move content between devices. This could work with both AirPlay and Handoff, depending on the type of content you are seeing.

Let’s say, you are listening to music. You could say, “Hey Siri, play this on my AirPods Max” and it would automatically connect to your desired output source.

Now let’s say you are checking out some photos in the Photos app. You could just say “Hey Siri, show these on TV,” and Siri could AirPlay the album in the form of a slideshow on your Apple TV.

In the case of Handoff, let’s say you are on Facebook and you say, “Hey Siri, show this on my iMac” and your iPhone could prompt your iMac to open the same link in Safari.

  1. Persistent focus toggle

When you enable a focus on iOS 16 you will notice a small button below the clock on the Lock Screen which is used for switching between them. Although it can be accessed from the Control Center on the Lock Screen, it would be great to be able to switch between focuses on the fly at any time.

In our opinion, Apple should replace the camera button with a focus one. After all, you can already access the camera by swiping to the left. So having a camera button on the Lock Screen doesn’t make any sense.

When using the focus button, you are shown a small menu containing your focuses. All you need to do is slide your finger to switch between them. You could even disable any focus and return to normal iPhone layout. Plus, focuses could also improve the look of your wallpaper. By including this button, you could enable a focus even without unlocking your device.

  • Background sounds app

Apple introduced a new background sounds feature in iOS 16. But it is a hidden feature with accessibility settings. However, it could be brought to the surface for easy discoverability.

White noise apps are quite popular on the App Store. Introducing a dedicated app with quality spatial audio could be a great decision.

By now you should know that Apple drops support for some of its older iPhone models as they release a new operating system. This happens in most cases and the same can be expected this time as well. According to sources, the new iOS 16 which is expected to launch in 2022 will be compatible with the following iPhone models:
