Apple To Adopt Unibody Lens Design In 2022 For Better Videos & Photos
The Cupertino tech giant seems to have a lot of new plans related to future iPhones. The company is gearing up to bring noticeable changes in their 2022 and 2023 iPhone models. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the 2022 iPhone model will feature a “unibody” design that will integrate the voice coil motor and its lens array. The current modules utilize the same components, but they are implemented as separate parts. But the introduction of the new unibody design can help save a lot of internal space and at the same time will also increase device robustness.
The tech giant is also planning to include a telephoto camera on the high-end iPhone models from a 6P lens array to a 7P stack next year.
Apple is reportedly planning to move all its rear-facing iPhone lenses to the 7P stack in the future.
For those who don’t know, the 7P lens stack was first introduced with iPhone 12, which was last year. Sitting atop the wide-angle camera module, it helps improve light-gathering capabilities and also reduces chromatic aberrations. In comparison to the previous f/1.8 6P array, the current one performs at an f/1.6 aperture.
According to the analyst, Apple will introduce a periscope telephoto lens design to the iPhone 2022. This particular design is expected to increase the focal length of a compact lens array.
Periscope lenses, which are also known as folding lenses, are composed of an array of mirrors and prisms that increases the focal length of a compact lens array.
To reduce the front camera module’s size, Apple is expected to adopt a unibody lens design in 2022 at the earliest. This particular design requires the VCM and lens to be assembled before shipping to CCM.
As far as it is known Largan will start shipping iPhone VCM in 2021. So if Apple adopts the new unibody lens design in the future, Largan can integrate lens design and benefit from this new trend.
According to Kuo, the said technology would debut in 2022. He believes that the next-generation iPhones are going to be a complete game-changer.

Earlier in the month, Kuo said that Apple may think of launching a new foldable iPhone model by 2023. He also said that the phone would come with a 7.5-8 inch display. However, nothing is confirmed yet.
With these new changes, Apple is finally tweaking the iPhone optics in 2021. From glass, they will move to plastic cover materials for Face ID. This feature is expected to benefit the high-end models. The inclusion of a new telephoto lens with a 6P lens stack, up from the current 5P design is a great decision taken by Apple.
